Backyard Ultra

1758 1758 people viewed this event.

The Mapledurham Backyard Ultra is an exciting, engaging course on varied terrain, starting from the grounds of Mapledurham House, up through Chazey Woods and back.

An abundance of wildlife and gorgeous views across the Thames Valley is sure to help distract you from your sore legs.

Mindful, connected running is at the heart of all our decisions when designing this race. We’ve spent hours in these woods making sure it’s as enjoyable to run on as possible, and hope that you take as much value from this course and the surroundings as we do.

Aside from the running, you will find a bustling hub of activity around Mapledurham house where you can refuel and relax between each lap. There will be plenty of space to set up support tents and a camping area for those who wish to stay the night. There is an easily accessible car park with enough room for caravans. Drinking water will be available.

Make sure to follow us on Instagram for race updates and keep reading for more information about the Backyard format!

What is a Backyard Ultra?

The event was created by Gary ‘Lazarus Lake’ Cantrell. It is a form of ultramarathon race where runners must consecutively run the distance of 6.7056km (4.167 miles) in less than one hour. Runners who are not back at the start line for the next lap are disqualified. There can only be one winner and all other runners will receive a DNF.

What are the specific rules?

  • The course must be at least 4 miles 880 feet in length (6.7056km).

  • The starting corral will stay the same size throughout the event. All participants must be inside the starting corral at the sound of the bell or you are disqualified.

  • Each loop will start exactly 1 hour after the last. There will be a warning of 3, 2 and 1 minutes prior to start.

  • With the exception of restrooms, all competitors must not leave the course until each loop has been completed.

  • Non-competitors may not be on the course (this includes any eliminated runners) and includes no personal aid during a loop.

  • Each loop must be competed within an hour.

  • No artificial aids, e.g. trekking poles.

  • Slower runners must allow faster runners to pass.

  • There can only be one winner! The winner is the last person to complete a loop. If no runner can complete one more loop than anyone else, there is no winner.

I’ve never entered one before, can I enter?

Of course! Although the backyard ultra is known for being a real test of endurance often in difficult conditions, we want to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone of all running abilities. You can make it more competitive if you wish, or you can come and try it out just to see how many laps you can complete!

  • Aid station with drinks and snacks to fuel you on the day

  • DNF memento

  • Prize for the winner
