On Saturday, 19 August, 16 soapboxes, of all shapes and sizes made it to the start line at the Englefield Estate before setting off on the adrenalin charged, kamikaze speed timed run, in an attempt to take first prize in the inaugural Royal Berks Charity Soapbox Challenge.
Cheered on by nearly 2,000 people who came to watch the driving antics, entries included teams from companies such as Reading Metal Recycling, Porsche, Xpert Energy, Mattel, 360 Medical, as well as individual Senior and Junior drivers.
Thanks to the months of planning and huge effort put in by the Fundraising team the event raised more than £8,000 – a fantastic achievement.
Winners were Team 360 for the seniors and Team Wallbank for the juniors.
Plans are already underway for a bigger and better event in 2018. We are very grateful to the Benyon family and all who help to manage the Englefield Estate for supporting the event.
We also owe a huge debt of thanks to the volunteers from the Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh, Berkshire Masons,Hazel Cowper (and her mum), Thea Thomson and staff volunteers, Lorraine Colam, Becky Jennings, Roslyn Fissler and Abby Brown, and of course to all the entrants, volunteers and supporters who helped
make the day such a great success.”
