New Life-Changing Oxygen Therapy Devices Funded for Young Patients at Royal Berkshire Hospital
Royal Berks Charity celebrates the introduction of two Airvo 3 oxygen machines, thanks to community support including Reading Buses’ 2023 Charity of the Year partnership, the James Cowper Kreston Foundation, and a generous in-memory donation.
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is proud to announce a major enhancement in paediatric care, following the introduction of two Airvo 3 high-flow oxygen machines at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. These state-of-the-art devices are already transforming the treatment and comfort of children needing respiratory support in the Paediatrics High Dependency Unit (HDU).
The purchase of these vital machines was made possible thanks to the generosity of local supporters. One machine was fully funded by Reading Buses through their 2023 Charity of the Year partnership with Royal Berks Charity, while the second was part-funded by a grant from the James Cowper Kreston Foundation and a significant donation made in memory of a loved one.
The Airvo 3 is a cutting-edge device that delivers warm, humidified, high-flow oxygen therapy — a significant upgrade from traditional oxygen delivery systems. Designed with the comfort and safety of patients in mind, the equipment plays a critical role in treating children who require continuous respiratory support, especially during high-risk transfers between departments.
“The Airvo 3 has had such a positive impact on our young patients who require treatment in our High Dependency Unit,” said a spokesperson from the Paediatrics team. “The battery facility of 30 minutes enables our patients to use the bathroom — something that was not possible before. This small but powerful feature has improved the patient experience in a truly meaningful way.”
Crucially, the device improves the safety and continuity of care during transfers from the Emergency Department to the Paediatrics ward. The Airvo 3’s integrated battery allows children to remain on therapy without interruption, reducing clinical risk and enhancing outcomes.
“The Airvo 3 has enabled our patients to be transferred from the Emergency Department without a break in their treatment, which has improved patient safety,” the team added.
Alongside improved logistics, the Airvo 3 offers more precise oxygen control, reduced airway irritation, and greater overall comfort – all of which contribute to a more positive and dignified experience for patients and families alike.
Monica Srivastava, Charity Grants Manager at Royal Berks Charity, said:
“Being able to fund two of these life-changing machines is an incredible achievement, and one that reflects the power of community support. We’re so grateful to Reading Buses and their customers, to the James Cowper Kreston Foundation, and to the family who made such a meaningful donation in memory of their loved one. Together, they’ve helped us deliver better care for over 650 children a year who come to us needing urgent breathing support.”
This project is part of Royal Berks Charity’s wider mission to fund equipment and initiatives that go beyond the scope of NHS budgets — enhancing healthcare, supporting staff, and ensuring patients receive the very best care possible.
