Working with the community

We are working closely with Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) and Food4Families (F4F) to create a garden that is an area for reflection and quiet away from busy wards and departments but is also sustainable and functional.

RISC is a development education centre that aims to raise awareness of global/local issues and support action for social justice. It is a registered charity and limited company.

F4F is one of its key projects, launched to work with local communities to learn sustainable and healthy food growing skills. Since 2010 we have worked with many project partners to design and build over 30 community gardens, many within Reading’s most deprived neighbourhoods

“This is a brilliant way to welcome in the new growing season! After a period of uncertainty, and as we wind up our ‘meanwhile’ garden at Lavender Place, being able to resume our group food-growing activities at this fascinating historic site in Reading is a real honour. As volunteers we feel the distinct benefits of working in a shared green space. That we can now work on encouraging others to experience the proven health and wellbeing benefits of engaging with nature is a wonderful way to expand the Food4Families project. As we build a way out of the pandemic and the strength of our communities to address pressing social justice issues, this new partnership with the Trust is both essential and incredibly rewarding.
